In continuous mining, a machine known as a continuous miner cuts the coal from the mining face and deposits it directly into a haulage vehicle; an efficient technique that obviates the need for drilling and blasting. Room-and-pillar mining in low seams is generally less efficient than longwall mining because as much as 50% of coal is lost.
